da bet7： As the transfer gossip around Virgil van Dijk rolls on, The Sun report that Southampton are now expecting to lose both of their star central defenders over the next two transfer windows.
What’s the story?
The form of Southampton’s backline this season has sent transfer gossip into overdrive. As we discussed earlier this week, a number of clubs are tracking the progress of Van Dijk but he’s not the only one reportedly on the move.
The Sun reckons Southampton are resigned to losing both van Dijk AND Jose Fonte. They report Fonte is set to join Mourinho at Man United with Virgil van Dijk expected to sign for Liverpool.
Fonte’s contract ends in just over 18 months with the paper also reporting that talks to renew have not progressed since August.
It’s a huge blow for Saints fans who have taken both players to their hearts over the last few seasons.
How important are they?
The two defenders have helped Southampton in keeping ten clean sheets already this season with only Spurs and Chelsea conceding fewer goals in the Premier League than the Saints.
Jose Fonte, in particular, is a massive influence on the club, making close to 300 appearances since joining in 2009 when the club were still competing in League One.
He typifies their rise and fans would be gutted to see their defensive talisman leave.
Van Dijk has all the potential in the world and even though he’s only been at Southampton for one full season is a fan favourite at St. Mary’s.
If one or even both of the defenders move on, Claude Puel will have to be very clever in the transfer market to replace their ability and personal qualities as leaders.
