da pinup bet: Arsenal have been handed a blow in their transfer plans for the end of the season after Steven N’Zonzi signed a new deal with Sevilla, Spanish outlet AS reports.
What’s the word?
da bet esporte: Into the final six months of his deal with Andalusian side Sevilla, French ace Steven N’Zonzi had attracted reported interest from Arsenal and Barcelona. However, by penning a new deal, the former Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City man has secured his future to the surprise La Liga title contenders.
The 28-year-old has excelled with high-flying Sevilla this season, helping the three-time consecutive Europa League winners into the Round of 16 in the Champions League and pushing Spain’s giants for the La Liga crown- a trophy they last won 60 years ago.
Referred to as an ‘octopus’ from Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli, identifying the Frenchman’s importance to the midfield, N’Zonzi has been a key-player for the Seville outfit this season and losing him this summer would have been a massive blow.
Will he stay?
Whether he honours a new deal remains to be seen as interest from Arsenal and Barcelona could prove to be tempting, especially if Jorge Sampaoli leaves the club this summer. The Chilean boss has been linked with a switch to Catalonia as a replacement for Luis Enrique, who’s coming to the end of his contract at the Nou Camp.
Should Enrique leave for Barcelona or elsewhere, N’Zonzi could opt to follow suit and a return to the Premier League is an option, with the Frenchman spending six years within English football and may fancy another crack on British shores.
Whatever the circumstances though, Sevilla are likely to demand a high fee for the player’s services and the opportunity for Barcelona or Arsenal to land the Frenchman on a free transfer has been ruled-out.
