Mbabu moved to St James’ Park from Servette in 2013 and was handed his debut by former Toon boss Steve McClaren in a League Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday in September 2015, before he made his Premier League debut against Chelsea five days later.
The defender leaves the club having made just five appearances in all competitions, and Newcastle supporters were quick to have their say on the exit via social media.
Many fans were disgusted at the decision as they believe the 22-year-old impressed in his appearances for the Tyneside outfit, while others believe it will be a decision they will regret in the coming years.
