Newcastle United are now reportedly eyeing up a potential move to sign Philippe Coutinho in the January transfer window.
The Lowdown: Statement signing needed
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium are now in need of a statement signing after their takeover of the St. James’ Park faithful was completed.
One player on their list could well be Coutinho, who has been described as a ‘phenomenal’ player with ‘magical powers’ by former Liverpool teammate and fellow Brazil international Roberto Firmino (Goal).
The Latest: Coutinho eyed
As per Spanish outlet Sport, Coutinho is a player who the North East club are now eyeing ahead of a potential move in January, as they note that the Saudis previously contacted him last summer over a deal.
FC Barcelona reportedly want at least €50m (£42.5m) for his signature, but Coutinho would be happy to return to the Premier League.
The Verdict: Avoid
Sure, Coutinho was an absolute superstar for Liverpool back in the day, where he scored no fewer than 54 goals and made a further 45 assists in total from midfield over all competitions (Transfermarkt), showing that he has the capabilities of playing in English football.
However, he is 29 years of age now, and even though money is not an object to the new owners, £42.5m is simply far too much to pay for a player whose best years are behind him.
Nonetheless, there are younger players out there with more potential that the new Toon leaders can certainly sink their teeth into for the same kind of price.
